Oregon Government Project wins Environmental Design & Construction Design Award

Bend Metro Parks & Rec Building

Each year, Environmental Design & Construction Magazine, ED+C, holds it’s Excellence in Design Awards to honor projects that demonstrate a clear commitment to green building and sustainable design.  This year, Opsis Architecture’s Bend Park & Recreation District Admin Building design won in the Government category.  Premier SIPs is thrilled to have provided a SIPs roof for this project! You can find award winners announced in ED+C May’s addition.

After 41 years in the same building, the administrative building for the Bend Metro Parks and Recreation District moved into a more comfortable and greener facility in 2010. Premier SIPs is proud to have been part of this project aimed at minimizing impact on the environment, reducing energy costs and improving the customer’s experience in registering for recreation programs, getting information on parks and trails, and attending public meetings. This new facility is designed to serve as the district office for the next 50 years.

Bend Metro Parks & Rec Building

What materials were used? Recycled materials used in the building include Premier’s Structural Insulated Panels, post-industrial recycled fiber cement siding, ceramic wall tile, casework laminate and carpeting. Energy is conserved with the use of solar hot water, radiant heated/cooled floors and energy efficient light fixtures. The building has a green “living” roof for exceptional insulation. Bioswales on the outside of the building will collect any storm water runoff so that polluted water is not returned to the river.

Benefits include reducing operating costs, conservation of natural resources, optimizing the life-cycle of a building and improved occupant productivity. There is a higher initial cost in building a LEED certified building but that investment will be returned on energy savings within 10 years.
